At the start of the women's tournament, the USA wins a good game against Slovakia. After a brief period of feeling things out, it was Becky Dobson who scored the first goal of the game. This was obviously the spark that this game needed, as Slovakia had the right answer 56 seconds later through Cornakova. Less than two minutes later, the US women were up in arms again - Hannah Lindey had scored to make it 2:1.
The game was to be decided in the middle period. Taylor Steadman increased the lead to 3:1 at the start of the third period and doubled it in the 27th minute to make it 4:1. Slovakia was able to reduce the deficit again in the final period, but the USA and goalkeeper Brooke Wolejko in particular kept a firm grip on victory.
