Switzerland in the quarterfinals thanks to mature performance against Italy

In the duel for a direct place in the quarterfinals, Switzerland retains the upper hand against Italy. Thanks to a courageous performance, they won 3:1.

The Swiss set off a veritable firework as a game starter: three goals attempts, one at the post, after just one minute of play. They were to pave the way for a bold and mature performance. In the fourth minute, Captain Yanick Müller brought the Lonza Arena in Visp to the boil for the first time with his opening goal. The Italians responded with two shots at the post within a few seconds. With luck in their favour, the Swiss quickly recovered. Defensively controlled and offensively defiant, they forced the Italian defence into making mistakes. But the Swiss team missed several top chances.

Italy adapted better to the Swiss in the first break and made dangerous pinpricks in offence. Swiss goalkeeper Messer had to intervene decisively on several occasions, such as in the 18th minute when he made a miraculous save against D'Ettorre and Giustini to prevent what looked like a certain goal. Instead, Nicolas Wehrli made it 2:0 two minutes later after a perfect counter-attack, and Bardos even doubled the lead before the end of the second period. It was to be the decisive moment of the match.

The Italians stepped up the pace again in the final period. After a rebound off the boards ten minutes before the end, Lombardi reacted the quickest and reduced the score. Tension was guaranteed. The Swiss defended the lead with passion and continued to have the net on their side. Thanks to their victory, Switzerland is through to the quarterfinals. This will take place in Visp on Thursday.
