With a win, the Swiss ladies could have finished round robin in 5th place. Their steady improvement since the start of the tournament gave them cause for optimism. The British ladies played their second match of the day. They were clearly determined to make amends for their heavy defeat against Canada.
Supported by a vociferous home crowd, the Helvetians started the game with plenty of drive and were looking for the opening goal. They had learned from the high spirits in previous games and did not neglect their defense. Vuille had a good opportunity after four minutes. However, the British came into the game better thanks to powerplays. Yet, Switzerland goalkeeper Tschirren kept a clean sheet thanks to several brilliant saves from Towns and Taylor.
In the second period, Switzerland continued to pepper the British goalkeeper Bolwell with shots and clearly had the upper hand. Janjic, Gahler and captain Müller missed the best chances from promising positions. The young Helvetians made up for the physical superiority of the British team with their commitment. Tschirren continued to be reliable at the back. Two minutes before the second buzzer, even she was unable to prevent a rebound and Culshaw netted without trembling.
A few minutes into the final period, Zbinden had a great chance to equalize, but on the counter-attack Culshall caught the Swiss goalkeeper in the near corner to make it 2:0. Despite the Swiss team's attempts in the final minutes, this should have been the moment when the game was resolved. The Brits made the most of their efficiency in the win, while it was a bitter defeat for the Swiss.
