At the start of the placement matches, the Swiss ladies could not capitalize on their superiority in a 2:0 defeat against the team “United Nations”.
The young Swiss team performed well in the round robin, but was only rewarded with a win against the team “United Nations”. In the placement matches, the Swiss ladies are aiming for an ambitious 5th place. The first hurdle was once again the “United Nations” team.
Right from the start, the Swiss only knew how to go forward, while allowing little in defense. Despite promising opportunities to score at regular intervals, they lacked at times cold blood and determination in the decisive moment in today's game – and perhaps also competitive luck. In the second period, Janjic and Zbinden also failed to score after a fine run through the opposing ranks, as did Bissig alone in front of United Nations goalkeeper Gebrayel. The latter was to prove insurmountable. And Hale took advantage of a power play seconds before the second buzzer to take the lead for “United Nations”.
The blow for the superior Helvetians came eight minutes before the end: After Kummer missed a great opportunity to equalize, the “United Nations” team scored the decisive 2:0 on a counter-attack. Switzerland's subsequent last rally remained unrewarded.
The Swiss women's team concludes the Street Hockey World Cup at home against Great Britain. Kick-off is on Friday, June 28, at 16:30 in the Raiffeisen Arena Raron (free entrance).
