After a mixed start to the tournament, the world champions defeated with a 9:0 score Slovakia, one of the rivals as tournament favourites. The Slovak’s series of two wins in a row ended.
The reigning world champions from Canada did not get off to start to the tournament as aspired, with one win and one defeat. After yesterday's defeat in the revival of the 2022 final against the Czech Republic, Team Canada endeavoured to take control of the game against the Slovakians right from the start – with success. After a marvellous combination, Guindon only had to push the ball over the line after just over two minutes. The Canadians continued to dominate the game thereafter. It was therefore only logical that Karpenko made it 2:0 before the end of the first period.
The North Americans continued to dominate the game after the restart and pinned the Slovakians in their zone at times. Desmier-Pelletier with a long-range shot and Vigneau Sargeant after a magisterial overview by Upshall put the Maple Leafs ahead with a double strike after just over 30 minutes. The Canadians now took a liking to the game with a showdown. They steadily increased the score with some remarkable combinations: Davis, Bannon, Jude, Upshall, Kean and Karpenko all also got on the scoresheet. With this win, Canada has convincingly made it back into the tournament.
Team Canada already faces its next challenge on Monday evening when they take on the Swiss local heroes. The Slovakians will next face Switzerland on Wednesday.
